Finding My Way Through Feng Shui

I have long been a fan of Feng Shui, collecting books and the occasional tip, but never really put the techniques into practice in my own life. I definitely need to make some changes in my current situation and with all the information and books I own, I have decided to try my hand and make necessary changes room by room. If nothing miraculous happens, at least my home will be much neater and more organized.

"Feng Shui" means "wind and water" in the Chinese language. It represents the vital life force of energy that flows all around us and is called "chi." Everyone can think of a place they have visited that they immediately disliked or felt uncomfortable in, but maybe the chi wasn't right for the setting. And of course we all can remember another place where we immediately felt at home, completely at ease, and ready to relax away the day. This second setting most likely had excellent chi flowing around and giving the place the feeling of ease that you instantly respond to.

If your home is cluttered and messy, or just plain dirty, then the chi is not flowing properly and you may be facing issues in your life. Feng Shui principles believe that stuck chi creates problems that then manufacture themselves into corresponding difficulties. Piles of clutter around your house on top of every available surface could mean you are unable to clear through the issues in your head, or are hiding behind piles of things. As you go through the process of removing and sorting through your belongings, you also get a clearer vision of who and what you are about. It can be a very emotional process, and perhaps this is why many people don't even want to start the process.

But if you do manage to finally begin to clear away the clutter, then take your time and concentrate on just one small area at a time. Instead of attacking the entire room, how about that bookcase just inside the door where everyone dumps their stuff when they come home? Tackle the top shelf first, then the next shelf, and so on... you get the idea. Most of the time you will find that once you start the snowball effect takes place and you just turn into a clutter removing fiend. Roll with it and get your place neatened up.

Then once the clutter is gone, the fun begins. You want to create a space that reflects your personality, and suits your needs, all while staying neat and organized. It is time to decorate and create a room that will nurture your spirit and soul. Make it a space you want to return to, feel comfortable in, and make it yours. Using Feng Shui principles, you wish to arrange the room so chi can flow properly. Walk around your room and see if you have to sidestep a piece of furniture, or turn at a weird angle to squeeze through a doorway. If you have to contort yourself to maneuver around the room, then the chi will also get stuck and not flow properly. Step back and look at the space with Feng Shui eyes and move furniture so chi can meander around the room without getting stuck. This will give you the best energy for your space and is a great place to start when learning about the principles of Feng Shui.

I am still on the cleaning process, but am making great strides in removing my own clutter and keeping just what I need, want, or love. The rest goes! My furniture is pared down and stuff is put away so clutter doesn't pile up on me again. I still have an issue with the coffee table, but we are getting better. It's a work in progress for sure, but my space feels better and so do I.
